NCAA Eligibility Information

 

The following information represents basic guidelines to follow in order to participate in Division I and II collegiate athletics.

Please note, college athletic recruiting rules vary by sport. Be sure to check the NCAA website for the specific recruiting policies for your sport.

NFHS will send transcripts to the NCAA during the summer for registered juniors and after graduation for registered seniors.

Student athletes should talk to their team coaches regarding collegiate sports throughout their high school career.

Grades 9 and 10:

  • Student takes academic college-prepatory courses, preferably on in each of the following areas: English, math, science, social studies and foreign languages. The student should compare course selection against the list of NCAA-approved core courses.
  • List and research the colleges you are interested in.
  • Increase your game and exposure by attending a university or sport camp and making unofficial visits to colleges.
  • Contact college coaches via email or on- line recruiting forms explaining who you are and why you are contacting them. An academic and athletic resume, video/link and contact information for your high school coaches can also be included.

Grade 11:

  • Student registers with the NCAA Eligibility Center and completes both the academic information and the amateurism questionnaire.
  • Student registers for the SAT and/or ACT, making sure to use code 9999 a the time of registration. Using code 9999 will ensure the score is reported directly to the Eligibility Center.
  • Check the NCAA web-site to verify your core course requirements.
  • Consider creating a recruiting video based on your sport.
  • Contact college coaches via email or on- line recruiting forms explaining who you are and why you are contacting them. An academic and athletic resume, video/link and contact information for your high school coaches should also be included.
  • At the end of the student's sixth semester, the guidance counselor  sends the student's  transcript to the Eligibility Center.
  • Increase your game and exposure by attending a university or sport camp and making unofficial and official visits to colleges. 
Grade 12:
  • Schedule official fall recruiting visits with college coaches following NCAA guidelines.
  • Student continues to take college prepatory courses in English, math, science, social studies and foreign languages.
  • Student registers for  additional SAT/ACT tests if necessary, making sure to use code 9999 at the time of registration.
  • On or after April 1st of the senior year, the student goes back to their Eligibility Center account to update their academic and amateurism information and request final amateurism certification.
  • Senior year:  Make the final college choice based on your financial package, and the overall collegiate experience the school has to offer. The college coach will advise you re: the signing process, which varies by sport.
  • After graduation, the guidance counselor sends the student's final transcript (which needs to include evidence and the date that the student graduated) to the Eligibility Center.


** Students who plan to participate in Division III collegiate athletics are not required to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse. However, they still should follow the other steps as outlined above.
