DECA monthly newspaper article
Summer-
This past school year has been a great one for New Fairfield High School’s chapter of DECA. Marketing II students worked on various projects such as Birthday in a Box, Give a Gift, Mr. Rebel, Rebel Idol, and the Senior Citizens Prom, among others. All were a great success. DECA members attended the Fall Leadership Conference in October to practice valuable leadership and communication skills, which were very useful throughout the year. We also took a trip to New York City for a behind the scenes look at the NBC building and enjoyed attractions and shopping around the city. Next were the DECA State Competitions in March. Our chapter did extremely well, proudly sending eight of our members to Anaheim, California with Mr.Scherf for DECA nationals. Finally was the Annual Spring into Fashion Show which Marketing II spent a majority of their time preparing for this school year (with some help from Marketing I students). But all good things must come to an end, and along with the arrival of summer comes the conclusion of the term for this year’s officers, We say goodbye to President Rachel Murphy, Vice Presidents Matt Jablonski and Kellie Kotalik, Historian Chloe Cipriani, Secretary Bidget Fenerty and Treasurer Dan Hopper, as well as Store Managers Shelby Ingrao, Mike Frick and Kelli McCandless. All of you did a wonderful job and made all of us proud to be members of New Fairfield’s DECA chapter! I, Rebecca Salino, will be replacing Rachel Murphy in the presidential position along with Vice President Sam Charney, Historian Odette Kupper, Secretary Rose Avery and Treasurer Megan Kettel. The newly selected store managers are Andrew Kerner, Jared Randle, Dan Miley and Joe Petrone. All of us are very enthusiastic for next year and everything that we anticipate accomplishing with DECA. We hope to fulfill our positions as well as our predecessors and wish all of them good luck as well as the rest of the Class of 2009!
October-
The school year has just begun and New Fairfield DECA members and officers have already begun working away. Store managers, Andrew Kerner, Dan Miley, Jared Randle and Joe Petrone opened the DECA supplier store during open house on September 14 , so parents could stop in and check out the newly arranged store as well as the new Rebel merchandise. Officers, store managers, and of course Mr. Scherf attended an unforgettable weekend trip to Great Hollow Wilderness school on September 19. We spent the day doing activities to help us work together better as a team. Then we went caving in a nearby cave. By the time we returned to camp we were exhausted but we still had to collect firewood and make our dinner. We spent the rest of the night hanging out by the fire telling stories and playing games. Despite the temperature drop (40 ˚F!) , we made it through the night. We woke up and ate breakfast and then did one last challenge activity before our cell phones were returned to us and our trip was over. The weekend was a wonderful experience that probably none of us will have together ever again. We would like to say thank your to our guides Emily and Alex!
Marketing I DECA members are excited to begin their involvement in DECA activities this year. They are eagerly signing up to sell merchandise from our store at all of the Varsity Home football games this fall. The Fall Leadership conference is also coming up and I encourage all New Fairfield DECA members to attend. We will spend the day in different leadership workshops while meeting other DECA members from all over Connecticut! It’s a great learning experience for us. Speaking of learning experiences, we are in the midst of planning our annual Disney Internship trip at the end of January. We will spend 5 days in Disney taking Disney’s workshops for a “behind the scenes” look at what goes on at their theme parks. We are all very excited and enthusiastic about this as well as all of the other upcoming DECA events!
