Meeting House Hill School

Beginning August 30

Meeting House Hill School Renovation Project continued:

November 1, 2010

Bids have gone out for construction of our new wing.  They will be reviewed and awarded in late November.  We anticipate construction beginning late December/early January and are very excited that we will be moving forward with our new wing!  Recent test are explained in letters sent home and posted on the renovation “communication” tab on our school’s website: http://newfairfieldschools.org/subsite/mhh/page/renovation-communication-432.  If you have any questions, please give us a call.

In the meanwhile, our fifth grade students are continuing to learn how to use a grid system to enlarge a picture to “construct” their wall murals.  Below are some new pictures of the murals in progress.  See if you can decide which mural is Mr. G's, which is the start of a city scape and which is a wolf in the forest!

October 1, 2010:

We continue to have a calm beginning to our school year.  Programs are in place and students are actively involved in learning.  All summer project work is completed and we now await the next phase which will be construction of the new wing, replacing the Butler Wing.  Hopefully construction will begin in November.  The more noisy work will be done after school hours and on the weekends.  We are very excited about watching the new wing go up!  Students will be journaling about the progress and incorporating math and science skills about the project.

Our fifth graders are busy working on the murals for their classroom walls.  We will have under the sea, maps, etc.  Thanks to our wonderful art teachers for creating these projects and teaching gridding techniques for enlarging pictures.  Below are the beginnings of some of the murals:

September 1, 2010 Opening of School

Finally!  School is starting and we are so excited to have the students return.  All staff wore "MHHS Under Construction, Building our Future" t-shirts on the first day. That will be our theme this year, not only to support our renovation project, but also to focus on students "building" their academic skills.  We held an all school assembly to share videos of the Butler Wing being taken down and to discuss expectations for the year.  Students were excited to wear their construction hats, as we talked about "constructing" their skills this year.  One of our O & G project managers talked with students about the project.  They were fascinated to hear that he actually went to MHHS years ago and had classes in the Butler Wing!

The Butler Wing is finally down!  Once the abatement was completed and the building insides gutted, the building came down in three days.  It was amazing to watch two pieces of construction equipment work away.  The larger one taking big bites out of the building and crumpling the steel.  The other, a little cat, scurrying back and forth sorting and piling the metal for recycling and removal.  The slab is now being broken up and removed.  Next will come construction of the new wing!
