POW #10
The pirates look on as Black Patch counts out the money in the chest: "One hundred ninety-three, ninety-four, ninety-five. That makes a total of $195 in three kinds of coins. There are two times as many half dollars as quarters, and twice as many half dollars as nickles." One of the pirates says, "Wow! Think of all the pizzas we can have delivered." Another pirate asks, "How many coins are there of each kind?" What is Black Patch's answer?
1. Problem Statement: State the problem clearly in your own words. Your problem
statement should be clear enough that someone unfamiliar with the problem could understand
what you are being asked to do.
2. Process: Describe what you did in attempting to solve the problem, using your notes as a
reminder. Include things that didn’t work out or that seemed to be a waste of time. Do this
part of the write-up even if you didn’t solve the problem. Be sure to show or describe any
diagrams or materials you used.
3. Solution: Explain your answer in the case of the problem in complete detail. Also give
results, with explanations, for any other specific related problems you studied. Be sure to
include your reasoning in discussing any generalizations you made.
