The Big Debate
The students in Mrs. Linkletter's 5th grade class were split into two groups; The Pouncers and The Truth Talkers. With help from Mrs. Schenck, Mrs. Cannale, Mrs. Ruggles and Mrs. Linkletter, the two debating teams worked on information for the next few weeks. The kids brought in newspaper articles and they made up their own speeches and worked together as a class practicing what they were going to say. Quickly, the debate came on October 30, 2008 in the band room. The teams each had four candidates, four interviewers and two campaign managers. There were also two news anchors and their show was called “The World's Best News Show” channel 26. In the audience were the classes of Mrs. Tovino, Mrs. Labet and Mrs. Furnia. The debate was a success when the clapping of the audience lasted for awhile. The next morning on the announcements they revealed the winner. The winners were The Truth Talkers. Everybody loved the debate!

LANGUAGE ARTS
We did lots of things in the month of October. We read Paul Bunyon, which is a reading comprehension piece. We also did a reading reflection for what books we read. Why do you read and how do you choose a book? We have been reading Hachet. This is a book about a boy who survived a plane crash. We are also learning about grammar lessons and editing marks - like putting end punctuations at the end of a sentence. We have had reading logs every week. We have had spelling tests, and also 3 times each in cursive each week. We have also done X-files about prepositions and punctuation. We have done so much in October and learned about many different topics.

 SCIENCE
This October in Science we have been going over all kinds of maps. We had a project where we could create our own map. We made a fire escape plan and a 3-D and 2-D school yard model. We also split into lab groups and made our own lab name. We also made clan. Clan is a mixture of water, clay and sand. In Science we made a picture for fire prevention month. This is what Mrs. Linkletter's class did in Science.

 MATH
We have learned a lot in Mrs. Furnia's 5th grade math class. In the last couple of units we learned about angles, multiplication and much, much more!! In Unit 1, we learned about prime and composite numbers, we learned how to make arrays, and we studied square numbers and exponents. Unit 2 taught us about magnitude estimates, multiplying, percentages in probability, and multiplying, subtracting, and adding decimals. We learned about angles called opposite and adjacent angles in Unit 3. In this unit we also learned about angle measures and protractors.
