Meeting House Hill School offers a full academic program for students in grades three, four and five. Our reading program is a balanced literacy approach, using novels and leveled texts to instruct through shared reading, guided reading and literature circles. Our writing focus in grade three is narrative, while fourth and fifth graders learn about expository writing. The math program is based on state and national standards. While we use the Everyday Math materials, we also supplement to meet the district's objectives. Our science curriculum is varied, with many hands on experiences. Social Studies focuses on our nation and its development. Students attend specials classes which include physical education, music, art, library and health. Extensive Parent Curriculum Guides are available in the main office for each grade level.
In addition to the regular education program, we have a reading intervention program called "Soar to Success," which uses the reciprocal teaching model to teach struggling readers specific strategies and skills. Math support is offered to some children before school and during the school day. Our special education programs provide services for children with special needs. We have a wide variety of programs, which range from inclusion models to self-contained classroom settings.
Our school goals this year will focus on:
Community outreach
Literacy development
Special education service delivery
Building project
Staff meet often through staff meetings and on staff development days to work on implementing these goals. Our "Don't Laugh at Me" program helps students work cooperatively and respectfully, as well as understand conflict resolution skills. We also have a Peer Mediation Program, which supports students in problem solving issues that arise amongst students. Our PTO supports our school goals through monetary grants and participating in activities such as coordinating our "Character Board."
We have many extra curricular activities available to students. Please see the Activities page for these opportunities.
