Northeast Region Part 1 Vocabulary
harbor- A sheltered place along a coast where ships can dock.
bay- A part of an ocean or lake that cuts deeply into the land.
glacier- A huge sheet of ice that moves slowly across the land.
fall line- Where the hard rock of the mountains and the low plateau meet the softer rock of the Atlantic Coastal Plain.
broadleaf- One type of tree found in the Northeast. It has fairly wide leaves that change color in the autumn, such as Hickories, Oaks, and Maples.
needleleaf- One type of tree found in the Northeast. It has long, thin leaves like needles that do not change color in autumn. Also called evergreens, these include pines, firs, and spruces.
foliage- A cluster of leaves, flowers and branches on trees.
granite- A very hard rock found in New Hampshire and Vermont, used to build buildings.
quarry- A place where stone is cut or blasted out.
cause- Something that makes something else happen.
(For example:
Cause: I don't eat. Effect: I get hungry.)
effect- What happens as a result of something else.
canal- A waterway dug across the land to make it easier for large ships to travel a river.
lock- A part of a canal that can be closed off by gates, allowing water to be raised or lowered.
suburb- A community that is located just outside a large city.
urban- A very large community, such as a city.
metropolitan area- An urban area and its suburbs.
commute- to travel a distance each day from one's home to one's workplace.
natural resource- Something found in the environment that people use.
