(Words for first vocabulary quiz)
1. Blade: The flat part of a leaf.
2. Lobed: A type of leaf margin that has large indentations.
3. Margin: The edge of a leaf.
4. Palmate: A leaf blade pattern in which there are several veins that all start at one point near
the base. The veins look like the palm of a hand.
5. Parallel: A leaf blade pattern in which the veins are straight lines all running in the same
direction.
6. Pinnate: A leaf blade pattern that looks like a feather. There is one main vein that has
smaller veins branching off sideways from it.
7. Vein: The tube like structure of a leaf blade that offers support to the leaf and transports
materials to and from the leaf.
8. Venation: The pattern of veins in the blade of the leaf.
9. Venation Pattern: The design of leaf veins.

10. Arch: A fingerprint pattern characterized by lines that start on one side of the print, rise,
fall, and exit on the opposite side.
11. Loop: A fingerprint pattern characterized by lines that start on one side of the print, rise,
and then turn back and exit on the same side.
12. Whorl: A finger pattern characterized by lines that form circles within circles.
13. Chromatography: A process that uses water to carry pigments from one place to another.
14. Pigment: A colored chemical.
15. Wicking: The process by which water moves through a fibrous material such as paper.

19. Refraction: The bending of light rays.
20. Apprentice: A person who is learning a skill from an experienced person.
21. Patent: A document granted the right to take credit for an invention.
