Noteworthy News from Room 504
October 3, 2008
Dear Parents,
Where has the time gone? October is here. Your children have settled in and seem to have adjusted quite well to the routine (and differences) of third grade. I am very proud of how hard they have been working.
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out in the class. If you attended Open House, you will recall I had a sign up sheet available for volunteer opportunities. Please drop me a note by next Wednesday if you're still interested in volunteering and I will work on a volunteer schedule over the break. I look forward to having you join us in the classroom.
In class, we've been quite busy. We've completed our first math unit, and overall they did quite well. We started guided reading during Reader's Workshop. In Language Arts we've started writing lessons. Please ask your children to describe how they write an exciting beginning!
A few housekeeping items:
Please be sure to review the homework letter I sent home. Thanks for your continued help in signing your child's assignment pad nightly.
Please check with your child if they have all their school supplies. Some are already short on pencils. Also, please remember to send your child to school with a snack and a water bottle each day. As the days get cooler, please remember to send your child to school with a sweater or light jacket.
Thanks for all you do to support me in the classroom. Have a wonderful weekend!
Warmest Regards,
Gerri Broderick
PS: Please remember that we're off next Thursday, Friday and the following Monday.

Dear Parents,
Thanks so much for all your support from home. It truly makes a difference.
Handing in homework on time is very important in keeping up with our studies, participation in follow-up activities, and developing responsibility. During our first month of school the students were organized toward success with homework. During this period of transition from 2nd grade, there were many discussions about expectations and procedures for missing or incomplete homework.
Please send a note if extraordinary circumstances prevent your child from handing in an assignment on time. As we begin our second full month together, please note the following homework policy that is in effect:
Without a note from parents, assignments that are not handed in on time or are incomplete will be given a late slip and students will remain in for recess. This slip is to be signed by the parent and returned with the completed homework the next day. Students are responsible for making sure that at the end of each day, they have what they need for that night's assignments.
Students write in their assignment pads each morning and than bring them to me for signature. (please note while I sign their pad, it doesn't indicate that it's complete it just means that they've shown me they've done it. Time constraints don't allow me to review them for completeness and datesJ) Our assignments are generally posted on our class site by the end of the day. On those hectic days, I sometimes don't get to it. At times I may forget to update the front page that says “last updated” so always check the assignment page firstJ When in doubt you can always call a friend. Class lists will be prepared by our room mom and sent home in the coming weeks.
Thanks again for all you do. We're off to a wonderful start, and I'm so proud of how well they've adjusted to the increased responsibilities of third grade.
Have a wonderful weekend.
