Sound Vocabulary
1. Sound Any noise that can be heard.
2. Vibration A rapid back-and-forth movement.
3. Pitch Highness or lowness of a sound
4. Ultrasonic A very high pitch sound that people cannot hear.
5. Volume The loudness of sound.
6. Sound The ability to identify sounds as different from one another.
Discrimination
7. Sound Sound waves transmit sound. (Carries sound)
Waves Vibrations of particles which produce waves that have length,
frequency, and amplitude.
8. Property How an object looks, feels, sounds, or tastes
9. Medium Substances through which sound can travel. Sound is carried
by either air (gas), liquid, or solid.
10. Tension The degree to which a material has been stretched. To tighten
or loosen a rubber band will change the pitch.
11. Decibel The unit used to measure loudness of sound.
12. Amplify To make louder or more intense
13. Frequency The speed at which something vibrates. High-frequency
vibrations are rapid. How often something happens in a
certain amount of time.
14. Source An object or material that vibrates in a way that makes sound.
Example: The strings on a guitar.
15. Receiver Something that detects sound.
