Playing in the Band
There are many things to do in life,
The choices are quite grand.
But only a musician
Knows how it feels to be in a band.
To share a magical language and create a beautiful sound
The chance to be an artist in a special way, I've found.
My instrument is like a friend
Eager to come out and play.
The more time I spend practicing the better I can say
Those inner thoughts which fill my mind
Beyond the words I speak
Allow me to express myself in a way that's quite unique.
Each day I spend in band
I start to realize
Everything is possible
When seen through music's eyes.
Knowing that bit of wisdom
I now will take a stand,
And pledge myself to excellence by
PLAYING IN THE BAND.

Band Program Overview
MHHS BAND PROGRAM
There are three equally important parts to the band program:
Band lessons are held during school once a week and students are pulled out of their classes on a rotating basis to attend. Since they miss a different class each week their academic progress is not adversely affected. If they have a test or quiz scheduled during their lesson or if they are having a great deal of difficulty in a class, they may make up their lesson at another time. Schedules are posted in each homeroom and announced every morning. They will not miss any lunch/recess periods, but they may be asked to come for extra help or advanced work during team time. The day of their lesson, they will be responsible for finding out what went on during the class they missed and what the homework assignment is for that evening. This can be done during team time. Please be assured that your child's academic education is my first priority as well as yours. I firmly believe, as the studies prove, that the discipline required to play a band instrument will enable your child to better achieve in all areas of learning. Band members do have homework every day- PRACTICING! I expect 15 min. of practice per day (100 min. per week). All students will receive an instrumental music report card grade in January and June. Detailed progress reports will go out in November.
Band rehearsals will be held AFTER school until 4:15 PM on Fridays. They will not begin until mid-November and I will publish a car pool list at that time. The band rehearsal is where students learn to play together and is very important. If transportation home is a problem, I strongly suggest a car pool arrangement. Students must be able to get picked up at 4:15pm and repeated, late pickups may result in your child not participating.
Band Concerts: The band will be performing a Holiday Concert in December and a Spring Celebration Concert in May. These concerts are considered a “test” of the student's hard work during the school year. Every effort should be made to attend. The concerts are held in the NFHS auditorium and are very exciting for the students as well as the parents.
MHHS BAND EQUIPMENT
You are free to rent or purchase an instrument from any dealer or individual. However, Bethel Music Center (tel. 792-4304) is highly recommended for their fair prices, good instrument advice, full service (will pick up and deliver to school), and in-house quality repairs. It is well worth the short drive to Greenwood Ave. in Bethel in order to be assured of excellent service.
Your child will need the following items to participate in band:
Instrument in good working order with a name tag attached to the case
Lesson book: Standards of Excellence Bk. 1 and pencil. This book comes with an excellent practice CD and even a computer program.
Folding music stand to practice at home.
Additional recommended items depending on instrument:
Flute and clarinet “pad savers” and sax “gooseneck small cleaner” are cleaning tools that are stored in the body of the instrument to absorb moisture.
Clarinet and Sax: extra box of 10 Rico Royal reeds in strength 2½.
Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone: “Instrument care kit” has everything you need to clean the instrument.
Drum: Drummers will need to purchase a bell kit (comes with a set of bells, a drum pad and stands for both) and an extra pair of sticks.
Remember, we start lessons the second week of September, so don't delay in going to Bethel Music to get your equipment!
