"Silly" Questions
1. My child is getting/wears braces. Will he/she be able to play in band?
Braces are an inconvenience, but at least half of the band deals with that inconvenience very well! You can play any instrument with braces or an expander, but you should speak with your orthodontist if you have any concerns.
2. My child is left handed. Do I purchase a left handed instrument?
No, all band instruments have only one "version" and are played the same way whether you are left or right handed.
3. Do band instruments come in different sizes the same way that string instruments do?
No, all band instruments come only in full, adult sizes. Tiny students should avoid the trombone (arms too short) and saxophone (hands too small).
4. How will my child know when to go to band lessons?
Mrs. King prints a new lesson schedule every 4 weeks. Students bring one home, another is posted in every homeroom and lessons are announced every morning.
5. I have an old instrument that was used twenty years ago and has been up in the attic ever since. It it OK for my child?
Maybe! The age on an instrument doesn't matter, only the condition. The problem you can not tell the condition just by looking, it has to be played. Bring it in the Mrs. King or to Bethel Music Center to check out.
6. Will Band interfere with Chorus participation?
Absolutely not! Band does not interfere with participation in Chorus or Strings.
7. Would you recommend that instruments be purchased from E-bay?
BEWARE of NEW instruments that are sold on E-bay for $199 (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone) or $299 (alto sax). These are cheap "toy" instruments are are unsuitable for your child- a waste of money! E-bay often has great deals on new and used instruments, but you have to be careful. A NEW decent quality instrument will cost at least $300 (flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone) and $450 (alto sax). There are many great deals on used instruments, but you must beware of the seller , the brand, and the condition of the instrument. If you have any specific questions on specific instruments, e-mail Mrs. King.
