Introduction
You and your group members work for an 1870s interior design firm and you have the chance to design the mansion of Mrs. Barbara Merriweather, wealthy Manhattan socialite. This project would give you clout amongst the wealthiest society in New York, and would be a great advantage to your business. You can only do this, however, if you impress Mrs. Merriweather on another project. She is having you refurbish her niece's or nephew's (your choice) Manhattan studio apartment (in the style of 1870s "old money" from New York). Please keep in mind, Mrs. Merriweather is delighted by praise, so be sure to "butter her up" as you design her niece's apartment. Perhaps some flowers would do the trick?
Task
In groups of four, you will work with the resources provided to find the answers to the following questions, in detail. This should help cement your knowledge of 1870s "old money" style as depicted in The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, and assist in your understanding of the importance of setting and aesthetics in this and other novels.
Aside from the furnishings being used as descriptions of social status, what else do such vivid descriptions provide to the reader? Take into consideration the fact that Wharton wrote The Age of Innocence in 1918, several decades after the actual setting of the novel.
