FACS Courses
The Family & Consumer Sciences Department offers a wide range of courses which are open
to all high school students. Through these courses, students will gain skills in functioning
more effectively as individuals and as members of family groups during their adolescent
years and in later life.
Clothing Construction I
(Gr 9-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Whether it?s pants or a skirt, a vest or sweats: All of these projects can be finished in a semester.
Learn a skill that will last a lifetime. This course will give you the basics so you will know
how to read a pattern, do a hem, make a Halloween costume, or sew for your apartment or
house.
Clothing Construction II
(Gr 9-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
After learning the basics in Clothing I, you can choose projects such as a jacket and pants,
sweat shirt and pants, or even a Prom dress is possible. Have fun and expand your sewing
expertise. Why not even tackle a quilt and/or curtains for your bedroom? (Prerequisite:
Clothing I)
Foods I
(Gr 10-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Is the extent of your cooking expertise reheating food in the microwave? If so, why not sign
up for this introductory foods course. You?ll start out learning how to make fancy omelets
and progress to favorites such as Chicken Fajitas and Fried Rice using the wok. Homemade
sticky buns and stromboli are some of the recipes you?ll prepare and eat as part of the unit on
breads. At the end of the semester you?ll be able to cook dinner for your family and they?ll
actually enjoy it!
Foods and Nutrition
(Gr 10-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Are you trying to lose weight? Gain weight? Or just keep the body you have? Take this
course and examine how a nutritious diet can work for everyone?s needs - regardless of the
shape you?re in. Discover how to plan, shop and prepare nutritious and tasty foods whether
you?re cooking for yourself, your family or a large crowd. For those who might be thinking of
a career in food service, this course will provide a good foundation of skills and information
for a career in the food service industry as well as for the average person living on their own.

Sports Nutrition
(Gr 11-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Do you play on a team? Belong to a gym? Like to excercise? If you are an athlete or just
concerned about your health, this class will provide valuable information. You will learn
about nutrition and performance, weight management, precompetition meals, and menu and
meal planning. (Prerequisite: Biology)
Personal Growth
(Gr 10-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Issues of concern to teenagers will be addressed in this class. Development of self-concept,
values, goals and decision making, teen pregnancy, drugs and alcohol, teen suicide, roles,
dating, love, marriage, marriage alternatives, divorce and family violence are some topics
covered. Class discussions, videos, simulations and group projects are used.
Independent Living
(Gr 10-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
Can you make it on your own? Can you get along in the world without having to rely on
your parents? Whether you are going to college or to work, you will find that eating and
taking care of your clothes costs a lot of money. This course is planned to help you to live
your own life, and buy food and cook your own meals, manage your money, choose a place to
live. This course is relevant for boys as well as girls.
Child Development
(Gr 10-12) 1 Semester 1/2 Credit Wt 2
This course explores the psychology, physical, social, and intellectual development of the
child from birth to age six. Students will be able to recognize changes created by the parental
role, importance of prenatal care, the stages of pregnancy and childbirth. Guest speakers,
filmstrips, and films will be used.
Early Childhood Workshop I
(Gr 11-12) Full Year 1 Credit Wt 2
This course will review concepts of Early Childhood Development and explore types of early
childhood educational programs. During the first marking period, students will review child
development concepts and study nursery school procedures. For the second, third and fourth
marking periods, students will help organize and operate a nursery school program within
the high school. Job opportunities in early childhood education will be discussed.
(Prerequisite: Child Development students must write a paragraph indicating why they want
to take the course, their experience with children and how they plan on using what they learn
in this class in their future. Students will be screened and approved for taking this course by
the instructor and Assistant Principal.)
Students can now receive college credit for taking this course through Naugatuck Valley Community
College, therefore, it is expected they will devote an adequate amount of time and
energy to meet the college's expectations.
Independent Study
Independent Study is for students who wish to pursue advanced work in Family & Consumer
Sciences Dept. based on a program designed with the instructor to suit the strengths,
and be highly motivated in the area. At the end of the semester the student will submit a
portfolio of his/or her work. This portfolio should include such things as sketches and/or
original designs, completed garments and/or include written reflection papers and progress
& observation logs. Prior approval of the Principal, Assistant Principal and teacher must be
obtained before the independent study may begin. Approval is given for one semester.
Tech Prep
Tech Prep is a cooperative program between Naugatuck Valley Community/Northwestern
College and New Fairfield High School. This plan makes it possible to grant equivalent
college credit for high school mastery in selected Family and Consumer Sciences classes. Proficiency
tests are administered to validate outcomes. Tech Prep provides students an opportunity
to earn high school as well as college credit simultaneously to save money (they are not
required to pay college tuition or other college fees while accumulating credits in high school);
to pursue advanced courses in college after taking entry-level courses in high school; to transfer
college credits earned to other colleges and universities. Please see Tech Prep coordinator
for applications. To receive TECH PREP credit in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department,
the student must take both Child Development and Early Childhood Workshop.
